Get started

The first time you open Fidelius, a setup window walks you through four steps. You can skip any step and come back to it later.

  1. Install accio puts the accio command on your Mac.
  2. Tell Your Agents adds instructions to your AI agents so they use accio instead of reading secrets.
  3. Add Your First Secrets lets you create a project, or use shared, and add or import secrets. On a second Mac this step is Wait for Your Secrets: Fidelius pauses changes until your secrets arrive from iCloud.
  4. Turn On Backups saves an encrypted copy of your secrets to a folder. See Backups and restore.

Until every step is done, the sidebar shows a Get Started list with a button for each step. Click Hide to put it away.

Install the accio command

Choose Setup > Install accio Command. Fidelius puts a link to accio in ~/.local/bin.

Add ~/.local/bin to your PATH

A terminal finds accio only when ~/.local/bin is on its PATH. Install accio Command checks the PATH your login shell gives a new terminal. That can take a few seconds when your shell setup loads a lot. Meanwhile a sheet says Checking your PATH; click Cancel to stop there, and accio stays installed. If the folder is missing, it shows the change to your shell file and asks before it saves anything: click Add to PATH, or Cancel to leave the file alone. It checks again when accio is already installed, so choosing Install accio Command again fixes a missing PATH.

Fidelius adds the folder to ~/.zshrc for zsh, to the same file as Tab completion for bash, and to ~/.config/fish/conf.d/fidelius.fish for fish. You can undo it in Settings > File Changes.

Terminal windows that are already open don't see the change. Open a new terminal window, or run source ~/.zshrc in an open one.

To add it by hand, put this line in ~/.zshrc and open a new terminal:

export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"

Tab completion

Install accio Command also offers Tab completion for project names and options. Fidelius shows the change to your shell file and asks before it saves anything. To set it up by hand, add one line:

ShellLine
zsh, in ~/.zshrccommand -v accio >/dev/null 2>&1 && eval "$(accio completion zsh)"
bash, in ~/.bash_profile[ -n "${BASH_VERSION-}" ] && command -v accio >/dev/null 2>&1 && eval "$(accio completion bash)"
fishaccio completion fish > ~/.config/fish/completions/accio.fish

Connect your AI agents

Choose Setup > Add to My Agents Automatically… so Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI and Antigravity know how to use Fidelius. See Connecting AI agents.

Show setup again

Choose Setup > Show Setup Again, or open Settings, click General, then click Show Setup Again.
